School Profile

Upper Canada College was founded in 1829 and is one of North America's foremost boys' schools, offering Senior Kindergarten through university entrance and boarding for 88 students from outside of Toronto. Graduates of UCC — an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School with one of the broadest programs in the country — are highly regarded by top universities and post-secondary institutions worldwide. Our global network of alumni includes leaders and innovators in politics, finance, arts, athletics, media and beyond.

The urban boarding experience offered at Upper Canada College is incomparable. Our unique delivery of the IB Diploma Programme gives our grads an edge both in terms of acceptance and success at top universities, and prepares them to meet the needs of global industries worldwide once they enter the workforce. UCC boarding graduates have strong ties to their alma mater and we often hear them say the same thing: "UCC put us ahead of the game."

What's more, there's no better place in the world to live and study than Toronto. Don't take our word for it: in 2019 Toronto was ranked #7 by The Economist as the best city to live in, taking factors such as safety, cost of living, business environment, culture and government stability into consideration. Toronto's reputation as a North American business hub and respect for civil liberties makes it an ideal environment for learning.

Mission & Values

Our Mission

Upper Canada College provides transformational learning experiences that foster the development of head, heart and humanity, and inspire each boy to make a lasting and positive impact on his world.

Our Values

Learning

Learning about oneself and the world is at the heart of a UCC education. Through a rigorous liberal education and programs of personal development, each boy gains an understanding of himself, strong and wide-ranging skills, and knowledge that prepares him for success and responsible citizenship. We strive for excellence and celebrate accomplishment, valuing learning as a journey and not a destination. At UCC, learning is an ongoing pursuit marked by curiosity, collaboration, persistence and openness to feedback. As a community, we model a culture of learning and growth.

Pluralism

A UCC experience is about more than just an appreciation of diversity; it is about celebrating differences, cherishing similarities and giving voice to multiple perspectives. Through an understanding and appreciation of pluralism we create a more inclusive community, and in turn, create a more just society where we work towards the common good.

Service

To honour Sir John Colborne's founding commitment to public purpose, UCC inspires boys to become service-oriented leaders who understand their unique qualities in relationship to others, have humility and empathy, and recognize their ability to positively influence change. At UCC we embrace the opportunity and responsibility to make a difference in our local and global communities.

Community

UCC's culture is characterized by teamwork, collaboration, mutual respect and a fundamental belief in our Vision and Mission. We appreciate and value each individual, fostering strong and trusting relationships throughout our community. We stand by each other, offering support and care, and we foster in our boys the very best characteristics of brotherhood.

Wellbeing

To foster individual and institutional wellbeing, UCC is committed to a learning and working environment that is safe, healthy, meaningful, engaging and supportive. A UCC education equips each boy with the capabilities to develop the knowledge, self-awareness and strengths of character that enable lifelong resilience and allow him to flourish.

School Differentiators

Located in the heart of Toronto

The urban boarding experience offered at UCC is incomparable. We[?]re fortunate to be nestled in the heart of Toronto, a world-class city that reflects the diversity of our international boarding community. Taking factors such as safety, culture, pluralism and government stability into consideration, Toronto is an ideal environment for learning. Within a five-minute walk from the College, boarding students have access to our convenient public transit system and all that the city has to offer, including theatres, museums and professional sports centres.

Vast array of weekend and co-ed activities

We provide a vast array of planned weekend activities, including co-ed events with students of local girls' schools. In class and beyond, activities are designed to support the boys in their learning journeys.

A tight-knit and caring community

With only 88 boys from 26 different countries in a school population of 1,170, our boarders form a tight-knit community they call a "brotherhood." Together, and with the support of a caring team of education and health experts, they enjoy safe and rewarding residential experience. Our boarding staff-to-student ratio is 1:5. We have advisers and faculty who ensure that our boarding students develop the knowledge, self-awareness and strength of character that will help them succeed. We also have committed Health Centre staff to provide medical care, assessment, emergency treatment and personal counselling. With full-time registered nurses, a psychologist and school counsellors, UCC keeps the development needs of adolescent boys foremost in mind. Boys have access to a local, on-call family physician, and UCC is a short drive to world-renowned hospitals, including the Hospital for Sick Children.
